Explore the Basque Country and its traditions

From the festive capital of the Basque Country Bayonne to the charming border town of Hendaye, via the surfing Mecca of Biarritz and the labourdine cities classified as “Most beautiful villages in France”, the Basque coast and hinterland are full of different atmospheres. From the former whaling port and royal resort of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, you can discover Basque towns and villages of character: the corsair city of Ciboure, the small village of Guéthary, the listed villas and the cornice of Hendaye, the City of the Ocean and the Rock of the Virgin of Biarritz, or the ferias and cultural heritage of Bayonne mark the French Basque coast as far as the Spanish border. In the countryside, traditional villages and medieval villages will introduce you to another facet of the territory: on the programme of your holidays at the Basque campsite Merko-Lacarra, the bastide of Sare and the little cogwheel train of the Col de la Rhune, the Navarrese Bastide-Clairence, its arcades and half-timbered houses, Espelette and its garlands of peppers, or Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a key stop on the roads to Compostelle located at the foot of the legendary Col de Roncesvaux.
