These initiatives aim to promote more responsible, more authentic tourism.

At Merko Lacarra campsite, “activities” doesn’t mean making noise. It means creating meaningful moments—for holidaymakers, for the local area, and for the planet. In peak season, we offer our guests free activities designed to spark real environmental awareness and provide a few keys to more mindful tourism. No speeches, no lessons—just practical, friendly experiences that everyone can enjoy.
Among them: beach clean-ups with Surfrider Foundation—a collective gesture, feet in the sand, to care for the coastline we share. And waste-sorting awareness workshops with Bil ta Garbi, to better understand how to reduce your impact during your holiday. Cultural and creative activities round out the programme depending on the season and opportunities.
We’re especially attached to these moments. Because, in their own way, they extend the eco-responsible commitment that has guided the campsite for decades—and because we hope they’ll inspire you to keep doing the right thing once you’re back home.
Family activities
Merko Lacarra’s must-do family activities in summer:
- “Discovering the starry sky” (new this season): accompanied by an astrophysicist, young and old look up to learn how to spot constellations and understand what’s happening above the Basque Country; a calm, fascinating evening far from city lights.
- the annual pétanque tournament, a legendary moment when teams form and the competition stays friendly; take on the campsite’s best players in the international tournament!
- the outdoor cinema, set up in the heart of the campsite in the activities area; amplified sound, giant screen, and a screening seated on the grass for a gentle summer evening.
A friendly atmosphere guaranteed, with the snack bar open during the evenings. Non-residents can attend events on request.
Local producers’ markets at the campsite
Several times during the season, Merko Lacarra campsite turns into a small open-air market. A chance to bring the best of the Basque Country directly on site: its producers, its craft makers, its flavours and its know-how.
As you wander the stalls, you’ll discover local crafts (textiles, leather goods, ceramics, etc.) and the richness of a gastronomy that rivals any: Espelette pepper, duck, sheep’s cheese, craft beers brewed in the region… Passionate young local producers, authentic products, and chats that make you want to learn more about this area, in the cheerful atmosphere of a village market.
That’s also the kind of mindful tourism we try to nurture here: not consuming the Basque Country from afar, but meeting the people who bring it to life every day. These markets are designed as a full activity in their own right—friendly, delicious, local—making you want to get moving, explore, and bring a little Basque soul home in your suitcase.
Lively evenings:
bring your Basque summer to life!
Merko Lacarra campsite evenings are designed to be festive without being intrusive. In high season, about every 3 days (often on Sundays), the activities area lights up for a friendly evening:
- Acoustic concerts: local or regional artists for a warm, intimate atmosphere under the Basque stars;
- Catered evenings with Txerriki: our food partner hosts themed evenings around Basque local cuisine. On the menu: typical Basque Country dishes—axoa, xipirons, paella, homemade burgers, taloak. A treat! Booking recommended.
Evenings end before 9:00 PM to preserve the peace and quiet of the site and the neighbourhood. The atmosphere is family-friendly, welcoming, and no fuss—just like the campsite.
