Espelette at a Glance
You can’t visit Espelette without encountering its famous pepper! Classified as AOP since 2000, it grows in 10 Basque Country municipalities and comes in powder, rope, or purée form. In late summer, house facades are covered with ropes of peppers hung to dry, a unique sight. To understand it all, the Pepper Workshop and interpretation center reveal the cultivation, harvest, and producers’ expertise, from seed to powder.

Good to know: to see the pepper ropes drying on the facades, aim for late summer and early fall, before the harvest. The pepper festival, on the last weekend of October, brings together more than 200 exhibitors and attracts huge crowds. It’s best to arrive early and park on the village outskirts.

Saint-Étienne Church and the Barons’ Castle
Beyond the pepper, Espelette reveals beautiful Basque heritage. Saint-Étienne Church, whose construction began in 1593, impresses with its fortress-like appearance and massive bell tower. Inside, 3 levels of wooden galleries and a gilded 17th-century baroque altarpiece testify to the richness of the place. A bit higher up, the castle of the barons of Ezpeleta, built around the year 1000, overlooks the village. It now houses the town hall, tourist office, and a permanent exhibition on pepper.

Visiting Espelette also means taking time to stroll. The streets are lined with beautiful Labourd-style houses, white with Basque red half-timbered sections, housing producers’ shops and workshops. You can taste the pepper, of course, but also Ossau-Iraty cheese, Basque cake, and chocolate with pepper.
