Campsite Espelette Recognized AOC – AOP, Espelette chilli is grown in only ten municipalities. A noble and rare product, it is the only chilli in France produced according to strict specifications guaranteeing its quality and typicity, particularly with regard to origin, link to the land and production methods that respect the product. The first flowers of the peppers appear in June and the first fruits three weeks later. In mid-August, the chilli are picked and dried on the facades of the houses. Every year in the autumn, on the last weekend of October, the village of Espelette celebrates its spice. Indeed, the Espelette chilli festival was born in 1968. This small condiment, known at the time mainly around the village, already had its place in the local cuisine. Over the years, it has reached a wider audience.
The Espelette chilli festival is the most convivial in the Basque Country. During the festival, you can of course buy chillies or derivatives such as Espelette chilli powder, but also other regional products. Basque dance shows, traditional music concerts, a mass, bandas parades, pelota games, etc. are organized during this festive weekend.
